How Parental Leave Worksheets Work

Families often ask for a single “maternity leave calculator” that somehow knows their state program. Ours does not. It only combines numbers you already obtained so the unpaid gap is visible before you talk to HR.

Not legal, tax, or child-support advice
DOL FMLA resources explain federal job-protection concepts for covered situations; paid leave is a separate question. Confirm eligibility and benefit amounts with employers and official program materials.

The arithmetic

Weekly base = annual salary ÷ 52. Weekly replacement = (employer-paid percent × base) + state/disability weekly amount you enter + other weekly income. Leave income total = weekly replacement × leave weeks. Gap per week = max(0, base − weekly replacement).

Worked pattern (method only)

On the calculator page, a $52,000 salary implies a $1,000 weekly base. At 50% employer pay plus a $200 weekly benefit you researched, replacement is $700/week; a 12-week sketch totals $8,400 leave income with a $300 weekly unpaid gap. Change any input and the gap moves with it—there is no hidden statutory table.
