Pet Calories Explained: RER, MER, and Feeding Portions
Calories on a pet food label become useful when you know an energy target. RER and MER give educational targets; your veterinarian and the bag’s feeding guide refine them.
The core equation
A widely taught resting estimate is RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. Maintenance energy multiplies RER by a life-stage factor (neutered adult, puppy, kitten, and so on).
From kcal to cups
Portions/day ≈ MER ÷ kcal per cup (or can). Always prefer the manufacturer’s energy density over generic averages.
